A common experience among new cyclists is the ‘downpour epiphany’. This typically happens the first time a rider gets caught in heavy rain. During an unexpected soaking, people normally tense up, curse their luck and wish they were elsewhere. But on a bike, something mysterious happens- the experience of being rained on can be hugely enjoyable. Perhaps it’s because the water is refreshing. Or just feels nice. Or because the world shimmers beautifully in the rain…..the downpour epiphany is partly about the release of apprehension that comes when the sky lets go and we realize it doesn’t matter. We’re so used to being screened off from the world, sometimes we forget the joys of getting out there and just being in it, face-to-face.
