Practise recording your voice!

HELP MAGGOTS!! This won’t take long. My colleague Dominick is based in Munich and is doing his thesis on the spread of the new Dublin accent throughout Ireland, through media such as RTÉ.

He is looking for speech samples from people who are from Dublin and from people who are from other parts of Ireland.

All recordings will be stored anonymously and confidentially.

If you want to help, you should record your name, age and where you grew up and then this text:-

On the first day of March, Conor was walking through town in mild spring weather. It would be night soon but he was done shopping. On his way home he got lost near Merrion Square. That was no big deal, he thought.
He passed a girl playing on the path with a boat and a toy whale. She also had a modern watch, so Conor asked her for the time. The girl glanced up at him. Her face was not very clean but she had a soft voice. It’s three past four, she said.

If you use Whatsapp on your smart/android phone, you should send your recording to this number – +49 15733136955 or you can send your recording to this email address do.se.instruments@gmail.com

Thanks from Dominick

The Downpour Epiphany

A common experience among new cyclists is the ‘downpour epiphany’. This typically happens the first time a rider gets caught in heavy rain. During an unexpected soaking, people normally tense up, curse their luck and wish they were elsewhere. But on a bike, something mysterious happens- the experience of being rained on can be hugely enjoyable. Perhaps it’s because the water is refreshing. Or just feels nice. Or because the world shimmers beautifully in the rain…..the downpour epiphany is partly about the release of apprehension that comes when the sky lets go and we realize it doesn’t matter. We’re so used to being screened off from the world, sometimes we forget the joys of getting out there and just being in it, face-to-face. Cycling reminds us how.” very apt lines (considering the week that’s in it!) from Einstein & The Art of Mindful Cycling – Achieving Balance in the Modern World.
